New Classrooms

This week at the Gardens School the builders are building a new classrooms and a new stone road starting from the back entrance down to the middle court stairs at the field for the juniors.

Protection of the Eel and Velvet the Eel

This afternoon is the assembly, run by Kea 1 all about the protection of the Longfin Eel.

This long eel, named 'Velvet', is about 36 meters long and made from fabric. Each part of the eel has been made by students from a different school. Here are some parts of the eel:

There was also a fish, the native kokopu on display in the hall. It had plastic plates and lids stuck on it with words children wrote about what they learnt and what we can do to protect native New Zealand fish and the long fin eel.

This assembly has taught everyone more about how to protect the long fin eel and stop pollution in streams and lakes.

Black Out Day

Today was Black Out Day, which is a day New Zealanders wear black to support the All Blacks. At T.G.S everyone brought a $1 to wear black mufti and many students went beyond a simple black outfit. We wish the All Blacks the very best and hope they win the Rugby World Cup 2011.

PE Session

On Thursday, 1st of September, Huia 2 had their first volleyball session with Miss Griffin. We learned how to set. The first thing we did was fling the ball in the air and once the ball came down, we would flick it back in the air with our fingers. After practising that, we had to be in groups of two, so someone could pass the ball and the other person could set it. When we finished practising, Miss Griffin put us in groups of three. The first person had to serve to the second person, that person had to set back, then the first person had to pass it to the third person, then we would start all over again. Once we had practised enough, we had play in our house groups: Rimu, Kauri, Tawa and Kowhai.Who ever did the most sets, would receive a token worth 100 points. Unfortunately, Kowhai ended up with 8 sets and fortunately, Tawa had 29 sets! They received the 100 point token. That was the end of the PE session. We all enjoyed it.

Rugby World Cup Jerseys

On the 9th September 2011 the Rugby World Cup is starting.
To show our interest and appreciation, Huia 2 coloured in all the rugby jerseys of the countries participating in the Rugby World Cup. On each of our banners, we had to include the capital city, the flag, the national costume and how to say 'hello, how are you' and 'welcome' in the language of that country.
Because our walls are already so full, we had to hang the display from the ceiling and on the window!

Assembly Practice

Yesterday, the Intermediate team had an assembly practice for our Syndicate's assembly today. In our assembly we have two main hosts, Rachel and Dharia. There are also two speakers from each class to represent what their class is doing during school hours this term. Huia 2's representatives are Annalise and Trent. They have had a lot of practice with Mrs Irwin. Also in our assembly, we went over a couple of dances that we will be using at our School Ball later this term. We will perform these for the assembly. The year seven and the year eights split into two groups. We went over the whole assembly, so hopefully, we will show our best to make the actual assembly perfect this afternoon!

A few days ago, some workmen dug up our beautiful field [and made a mess out of it!] making a track for trucks to deliver temporary classrooms. They are doing this because, one-by-one, many of the classes will be taken down and re-built so that they won't leak. Mrs. Irwin says that maybe our class will be re-built this year. Hopefully not, because all our wonderful work will have to be taken down.

We then moved on to a competition between the

school's houses:Tawa, Kowhai, Rimu and Kauri.

The final battle was between Tawa and Kauri. Tawa

won in the end 9-10.

All in all, it was a great experience and everyone

This term, Huia 2 is starting to look at movement 'from place to place'. We are are studying exploration and Mrs Irwin has kindly issued books for us. This Term, we will also be having Wearable Arts. "Wearable arts is all about 'telling a story' through a piece of art that is 'Wearable' ".

This week, is Te Reo Maori week.
In Huia 2 we have been learning Maori. We have also been reciting a Karakia and a song called 'Pokarekare ana'. It has been lots of fun learning a little of N.Z.'s other 'official language' and everyone's pronunciation is starting to sound great!
Mrs Irwin told us to write down some of the basic Maori words and the numbers. We're hoping to memorize them. We have recently been trying to use some given Maori words and translate them into English place names.

This week is Leadership Week. In our class we are learning all about Sir Peter Blake. We completed short assignments to do with his life and tragic death. Mrs Irwin created a display on our wall dedicated to Sir Peter Blake. He was a hero not only for New Zealand but for the whole world. He had a very successful yachting career and was also a loving family man. After his America's Cup win, he turned his attention to the environment after seeing what was happening to the seas during his around the world trips. He created Blakexpeditions. It was on his voyage up the Amazon that he was tragically shot by pirates.

On Tuesday 21st June, Huia 2 was doing spelling.Suddenly, Kelvin said "Mrs. Irwin!You have a spelling mistake!" Then Mrs. Irwin corrected the spelling mistake.The spelling mistake was a missing letter m in 'accommodating'. So, everyone cheered except for Mrs. Irwin because she has to give everyone a marshmallow each if she ever makes a mistake!We liked the marshmallows.

On Wednesday 8th of June, Huia 2 began a different session in Poutama. The Year 7's went to Mr Yates in Food Technology, where they are learning to cook new foods, and the Year 8's went to soft materials where they are learning to sew boxers. The Year 8's had to first cut out the outlines for the boxers. Next they received a sample (white square of cotton) which they had to iron, sew two patterns on from the sewing machine, sew on two buttons and fix a tear! Some children had a Science Exam so they missed the first half, but luckily caught up. Even though both the year-groups had a really busy start I'm sure they learnt lots along the way

This week our value is Integrity.Integrity is shown when you stand up for something you believe is right. A very well written quote is "If you don't stand up for something, you'll fall for anything" which means that if you let something happen or you do something that you know is not right others will think you're an easy target. Another great quote about integrity is 'the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing' - A good example of this, not standing up for what you know is right was in Germany during WW2 when many German people knew about the Jewish concentration camps but they did nothing about this. Their main reason was fear. I think you should do what you believe in and speak up for what is wrong because you can always get help from the police or SPCA.

Our Battle for Crete assignment

On Friday 20th we are having some RSA members coming to our school to attend our special ANZAC ceremony. Because this week is the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete, we have been producing charts about this famous battle to present for our RSA guests. We could choose any aspect of the battle we wanted or even the whole battle and what happened afterwards.

As an optional extra we could make a diorama showing some aspect of how the battle was fought.

A Normal Thursday PE Session

Every Thursday afternoon, Huia 2 has a PE session with Miss Griffin. This term we are leaning basketball skills: dribbling, shooting, lay-ups, jump-shots, speed-dribbling etc. It is a pleasure to have PE because Miss Griffin is usually away doing interschool sports on Thursdays.

Every Wednesday morning, after fuel break we go to the Poutama Center. The Poutama Center has four rooms which have Sewing, I.C.T, Cooking and Hard Materials lessons. We share our Poutama time with Kea 2. We are split into our four groups which are Sewing (Yr7 Huia 2), Cooking (Yr8 Huia 2), I.C.T (Yr8 Kea 2) and Hard Materials (Yr7 Kea 2). This term, the year 7's in the Sewing room have started creating boxer shorts and the year 8's in the Cooking room are having fun becoming chefs. In the Hard materials Room, the Kea 2 Year 7's are making pewter jewellery and for ICT, the Kea 2 year 8's are planning a Keynote presentation on Keeping Ourselves Healthy - making the right choices.We all are enjoying and looking forward to the next few weeks in Poutama.

This morning in Huia 2, after Mrs Irwin read out the roll, we were able to try some of the delicious Pavlova that she had bought for us. We did this because after break,we had to do a writing test - 'writing to describe' and we described what a pavlova is.

Mrs Irwin then told us to think about how to write it and think about how to describe a 'Pavlova' to someone who hadn't ever seen one.
After fuel at 11o'clock, Mrs Irwin let us brainstorm for fifteen minutes on a scrap piece of paper, which was then stapled on to our test paper, at around quarter past 11, Mrs Irwin gave us thirty minutes to write our explanation and for the last ten minutes she asked us to proofread and edit our work.

In Huia 2 this term our homework subject is researching the Battle for Crete. First we received a sheet explaining our homework. We have to pick an aspect of The Battle and construct a chart explaining the specific events in World War 2. We have to research and gather information. For some of the year 7 students who struggle with homework, you can choose one famous person who took part in World War 2's Battle of Crete and research that person. We have to include an attractive 3D aspect and make clear and relevant headings, pictures, maps, borders. We have to present our chart in front of the whole class.We can also choose to make a diorama or model of some part of the battle.
Some people from the RSA are coming to our school and we will be presenting our charts in front of them.

Figurative Language Study

In Huia 2 we have been studying figurative language. Figurative language is putting together parts of language that make our writing more effective. Mrs Irwin chose a book called Storm Boy written by Colin Thiele to study. Firts of all she read this book to us which gave us a good understanding about the story. We were set some tasks which we completed in our books showing that we could recognize the figurative language usage on some pages. We now have learned a lot about figurative language and ways we can use it ourselves to make our own writing more effective . Now we are learning about explanation in descriptive writing and we shall try to use figurative language in these.

Osama Bin Laden is dead

Every day in Huia2 we have been discussing current events that have been going on in the world. This week we talked about what happened over the holidays as well like the royal wedding. Already this week we have talked about the death of the US most wanted man, Osama bin Laden as well as the huge tornado on the North Shore, Colonel Gaddafi's son and 3 grandchildren who were killed in a bombing raid on his house in Libya, the big earthquakes that have happened in Christchurch, the Breakers winning the Australian NBL, Mark Todd winning the Badminton Horse Trials and much more.

Welcome back to Term 2!

This Term we will be studying human rights which includes looking at the inequalities of wealth and poverty in the world, children's rights, the incidence of child labour compared to our lifestyle here as children in NZ and our responsibilities that come with our rights. On top of that we will also be having an ANZAC Commemoration assembly on the 20th of May, where we will pay our respects to the men who died, fighting for our country. Early this term, we will be having lots of tests including: gloss test, IKAN test, Probes and in week 7 our Interim Reports will be going home ! On the 20 of May, the school will have a black and white themed disco, held in the hall.
Last term was fun and educational, hopefully this term will be even better.

The Korean Students Who Came to The Gardens School

On the 9th of February, six Korean students from South Korea, came to visit The Gardens School. There were five boys and one girl. One of the boys stayed in our class whose name was Steve. Luckily, our very own Korean student, Bong, could communicate with Steve and show him around the school. They might come back for a longer period of time. We have had international students at our school before.

Hi, we are in 2011 a new year in Huia 2, in the recent weeks we are learning about waitangi day, we have accomplished so much and its only been the holidays,WOW! I bet the other teachers haven't done that, our teacher Mrs Irwin has taught us heaps about waitangi day, how did the treaty happen? what did the Europeans do to the Maori? what animals did they brought along, why are there few native animals left? and so on. Speaking of Waitangi day we have done our modern one, we have a treaty about treating others the way we want to be treated, everyone has agreed and everyone has signed, recently I haven't seen anyone being mean to each other HORRAY! it will be like this rest of the year!

2011 Poutama Sessions

This year, Huia2 and Kea2 are doing Poutama together again but on a Wednesday instead of two afternoons. Apart from the first block doing maths and literacy, the rest of the day is for Poutama activities. We were split into four groups with Mrs Irwin taking I.C.T.(Huia2 Year 8's), Mr Yates taking cooking(Kea2 Year 8's), Mr Fowler taking hard materials(Huia2 Year 7's) and Mrs Davis taking soft materials(Kea2 Year 7's). In the I.C.T. group, we started by completing I.C.T. skills charts, one on Internet and one on Pages/Word/Appleworks. Later, we are going to do the Keynote Ladder and we will be set an assignment making a keynote/powerpoint about the Treaty of Waitangi. It sounds like fun and heaps of hard work!

New Huia 2 Students

This year, in Huia 2, we have 5 new students that have joined our hard-working class. Their names are Yvannah, Samantha, Alexander, Mannat and Taleyah. Yvannah has come from the beautiful, Cook Islands and The Gardens School is her first New Zealand School. Samantha has come back to T.G.S after a year at Balmoral S.D.A School, and is happy to be back. Alexander and Mannat have come from Hillpark Primary and are enjoying their time here at T.G.S. Taleyah has come from Wellington, so this is her first Auckland School. We are all happy to have them here and hope they will enjoy the rest of their years here at The Gardens School.

In Huia 2 we have already signed our Class Treaty, which says "Treat others the way you would like to be treated yourself." This 'rule' is Mrs Irwin's favourite,she says it covers every aspect of life, at school and out.

During our topic studies on the history of New Zealand, Huia2 students have looked at some amazing oil paintings by CF Goldie.
These were painted in 19th century and show some of the early chiefs and kuia of those days. They were like photographs, they were so lifelike. We couldn't get over the detail especially the skin and the moko on their face.

We are fortunate to have a teacher who speaks French (Le francais), who has taught us the basics. We have learnt how to ask each others name, age, where we live, our birthday, what the weather is like, the day and date, what we like to eat, if we would like to go to a cafe to have something to eat or drink, how to reply and so much more. Herb Planting - Our Garden - Picture of the Day

Today at lunch time, a group of us from Huia 2 (Annalise, Alexis, Claudia, Jessica, Rutvi, Shae, Sarah and Mrs Irwin) started planting our garden, which consists mainly of herbs and lavender, outside the Poutama Centre. First, we planned our garden into an array of small circles, each circle with the same "species" of plant/herb. Next, a few of us went and filled a few buckets of water and a watering can to water the holes in which the plants/herbs would be planted. While a few of us were filling the buckets, the rest of us were digging the holes for the lavender and various herbs. Once the buckets and watering can had arrived, one of us went around with the watering can filling the holes with water. Once the water had soaked into the soil, we started planting the lavender and herbs. So far, it has been a great success with our garden looking fabulous! We still have a tiny bit of planting to go but ultimately it will be awesome and we are looking forward to the finished result.

These are photos of the various badges that are given out at the start of the year to all students that have responsibilities. The first badge, the School Traffic Safety Team, is given out to all students that have successfully passed the test and become a road patroller. The second one, the yellow badge is a House Captain badge which is given to all students that are given the role of House Captain. The badges are given in different colours. Each colour represents a different house. The third one the white badge is given to students who are members of the School Council. Finally, the blue one, is given to all students that are School Librarians. All these badges represent the different roles our Intermediate students play in this school. The badges make it easier to identify who is involved and in what role.

She gave us heaps of ideas and tips for our Master Creator project that is coming up next term. Teams have been given two mystery boxes and they have to create a product out of the items in the box. They must advertise and package your final product.

Because it was Daffodil Day on Friday (27th of August) Mrs Irwin had the class paint daffodils on our classroom doors and windows. You can see Sunshine putting the finishing touches on her daffodil. The daffodils were inspired by 'Daffodils' by William Wordsworth (see below). We put the poem up on the projector and then disscussed it. It was a cool experience painting on glass and we all had a lot of fun painting them.

P.S. Since our daffodils have gone up, two other staff members have asked to have daffodils painted on their windows. Some of our talented artists have been painting them earlier on in the week.

Recently, the Maungakiekie team has created a magazine, produced by a team of students that are currently creating the 3rd edition now. Articles include Short stories, Science fair Updates, Comics, Recipes, Fantastic Facts, and loads more! This week is Maori language week (Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori). We all have to present a Mihi (speech) about ourselves in Maori and share it to the class on Friday. We also have to learn how to pronounce Maori properly.

They all were great successes and everyone presented them well. Sarah and Shae chose to present theirs on a power point. We all had to mark each other on our presentations. The mark was out of a possible 25 points.

Planting Trees

We learnt about trees on our way.

On Tuesday we had the pleasure of planting grass and flax at Totara Park to help the local stream. We planted them so that the plants could stop erosion going into the stream when there was a heavy downpour of rain. Have a look at these photos; we worked really hard and we received a bottle of water and an apple each.

The man told us about safety using spades.

Dancing with Mythology

We went to The Telstra Clear Pacifc Events Centre and took part in a programme called 'Dancing with Mythology We looked and the totem pole, which was donated to the centre We learnt how to do the Kapa Haka. We also went to a dance and drama workshop.

Learning CPR - First aid

LOL! We did CPR on our pillows after learning about first aid. It was loads of fun and now we are pro at it! The whole lesson was fill of loads of laughter. We had to practice D.R.S.A.B.C in our groups and it was totally LOL!!! :-D

This term, we are reading a book called "Castaway" written by Bill O'Brien. It is a good written book and the events in this book is based on real historical facts.

During the holidays Huia 2 received 5 new laptops and 1 projector. One of our favourite applications is Photo Booth where you can take normal and funny photos and videos. We haven't used the projector yet but, we hope to in the future. We so excited that we received this new gear.

Wonderful office display

This is a display of the Year 8's photography class in the office. The Year 8's took photographs of many different topics such as: Silhouette, contrast, close up, perspective, mood, ugly, beauty and water topics.

Then they printed and presented them beautifully on black paper with a careful white border.

If you look closely you can see our description of our photographs on the bottom left hand corner.

Louise Pizzini was awarded the cleverest photograph of all the photographs.

We worked hard our photographs and would love for you to head down to the school and check them out at the head office.
